Stoney Wood

Enjoy getting close to nature in Stoney Wood, Wirksworth's community woodland. You can go for a walk, picnic or play surrounded by trees and bird song. There are sculptures, including a labyrinth, infinity loop and the StarDisc. Discover the wood’s history from ancient coral reef to limestone quarry.

StarDisc

Reach for the stars at the StarDisc, a 21st century stone circle enclosing a star map carved in black granite depicting the constellations, their names, the Milky Way and equator. Located at the top of Stoney Wood, the StarDisc offers fabulous views of the night's sky and the Ecclesbourne Valley.

Mount Cook Adventure Centre

Experience the outdoors with a range of residential and non-residential activity experiences. The Centre sleeps up to 140 and the glamping pods up to 40. Activities include low and high ropes, bushcraft, archery, indoor climbing and an invigorating roof top zip wire.

National Stone Centre

Explore 40 acres of woodland walks including six former limestone quarries and panoramic views. Follow a self-guided Geotrail around our Site of Special Scientific Interest and learn about the geology of the area and dry-stone walling. Visit our rock shop, gem panning and play area and enjoy a meal at our Café.

High Peak Trail

Walk, cycle or ride the 17.5 mile traffic-free trail through some of the White Peak’s finest countryside. You can access the trail at Middleton Top Visitor Centre and Cycle Hire, just outside Wirksworth. The trail offers breath-taking views, wonderful wildlife and a close-up of the trail’s pioneering railway heritage.

Carsington Reservoir

If you prefer getting on the water, picturesque Carsington Reservoir Watersports Centre hires out kayaks, paddle boards, windsurfing boards, sailing boats and rowing boats. You can also launch your own craft or book taster, refresher and improver sessions, children’s activities and private or group tuition.

Walking

Stride out through beautiful hill country along footpaths and quiet lanes. Hill-top panoramas, woodlands, the High Peak Trail, Carsington Water and Cromford are all nearby. Follow the 11-mile Ecclesbourne Way to Duffield and ride the train or bus back. You can download a map and guide for the Gritstone Farmers circular self-guided trail starting from Wirksworth.

Cycling

Wirksworth makes a perfect base for cyclists. As well as easy access to the High Peak and Carsington traffic-free trails and cycle hire, you can explore the southern Peak District along quiet lanes. Fuel up at the town’s cafes and pubs before you set out or on return.
